A quick answer on a question I get asked all the time: How best to support artists in this current streaming age?

Buying vinyl or CDs at shows is the most direct, highest margin of profit an artist can make selling their music right now. That’s followed by buying directly from artists websites, or through Bandcamp, who offers the most fair pay to artists compared to all of the other music services. Sp0tify pays the worst, hands down. They have been consistently chipping away at what they pay artists over the several years, but because it’s so incredibly popular and we’ve all built our music worlds around it, it has us all wrapped around it’s giant corporate finger and I don’t see that ending anytime soon. BUT I’m not here to judge — it’s a great platform in a lot of ways and getting lots of streams can help indie artists spread the music to more ears and fight the algorithms that favor bigger artists!

It all really comes down to the fact that for most working musicians, the music industry has been changing for the worse, especially when it comes to compensating artists for recorded music. That’s a huge reason for the rise of Patreon, and the use of Kickstarter to fund recordings. They cut out all the greedy stuff that separates artists from their supporters. So for those who have asked, the top 3 ways of supporting artists today are, in order: 1. Being a paid member on Patreon, 2. Kickstarting their albums, and 3. Buying tickets to live shows (especially in advance)

But at the end of the day, the music lives on and I deeply appreciate whichever way you engage with it!
